Character Summary

Roman Ross is Dominion City's Toxin King, a pure human chemist and crime lord who rebuilt his father's pest-control company into the logistical spine of the Graveyard Shift.

Biography

Roman controls people through chemistry, fear, debt, and family obligation. His most dangerous weapon is not a single poison but an ordinary business network capable of placing a compound anywhere in the city.

Canon history

Backstory

Roman grew up in Dominion's industrial slums, where Stanley Ross operated a small pest-control business and taught his children the practical chemistry of survival. Stanley died in a plant explosion, and Roman's twin Richard was killed when abandoned factory scaffolding collapsed. Their mother Lisa's alcoholism and stepfather Darryl Porter's abuse completed Roman's education in instability.
By fourteen, Roman was running packages for street crews to feed the family. His experiments with chemicals produced improvised toxins, explosives, and drugs sophisticated enough to attract the Black Veil. He rose quickly because he could solve logistical problems and frighten people without appearing physically imposing.
When the Veil tried to sacrifice him after a failed deal, Roman incapacitated the ambush team with his own compound and dismantled the gang from inside. The underworld began calling him the Toxin King because every ordinary object around him could be a delivery system.
Roman revived Ross Pest Control as a legitimate facade and the Graveyard Shift's distribution network. Service routes conceal chemicals, surveillance, money, and personnel behind routine paperwork. His Venom Baton, insectoid drones, miasma cloak, and signature toxins let him control a room directly when the system needs a visible king.
He raised Webster and Micah as extensions of the empire. Webster's abduction and transformation into Huntsman turned Roman's preferred heir into his most exacting enemy. Micah remains closer to the organization but increasingly understands that Roman's idea of protection destroys the family it claims to preserve.

Origin

The deaths of Roman's father Stanley and twin brother Richard, an abusive stepfather, and an adolescence inside the Black Veil taught him to equate control with survival. After surviving the Veil's betrayal, he dismantled the organization and claimed its Dominion territory.
